Maintenance hangar
Maintenance in Germany’s largest
industrial hall
When the first new Lufthansa Airbus A380s starts flight operations right on time for the 2009 summer timetable, then things will also get serious in the areas of engineering and maintenance. As soon as the first aircraft arrives the halls required by them must be fitted out. Since all Lufthansa A380s will have their home base in Frankfurt, it is also essential that the necessary maintenance capacities are available here.
As the hangars previously available in Frankfurt were not big enough for the new, more than 24 metre-high wide-bodied aircraft, a new maintenance hangar was planned. It was built in the southwest part of Frankfurt Airport. The aviation group will subsequently set up the A380 maintenance centre there.
350 metres long, 140 metres deep and 45 metres high those are the dimensions of the new maintenance hangar planned at Frankfurt Airport for the future “King of the skies”. With these dimensions, the new hangar is the largest industrial hall in Germany the home of the most modern aircraft in the world.
Despite the considerable dimensions, in the design of the hangar, particular importance was attached to a high degree of utilization of the available space. 42,000 square metres provide space for four Airbus A380s or six Boeing 747s. Until the introduction of the A380, the hangar will be used for maintenance work on other aircraft types. |
